Nodding Greenhood
Pterostylis nutans

This is a terrestrial orchid that grows from tubers which are active from autumn through to early summer whereby the aerial parts of the plant complete the seed production process and die down. In the process new daughter tubers are created. Nodding Greenhood can be classified as a perennial herb. It is one of the more common terrestrial orchids in Victoria and on occasions can form large colonies. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in protected locations in either semi-shade or shade. Along our cliff top area it would most likely be seen under the canopy of Moonah Woodland (Melaleuca lanceolata); in protected gullies or further southwest in places like the Ironbark Basin.
Leaves form a rosette of 3-6 dark leaves from autumn onwards. Leaves are shortly stalked elliptic to oblong with wavy margins.
A single nodding, translucent flowerhead arises from the middle of the rosette between May and December.

Indigenous uses as provided by the Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation: Has an edible bulb at its base.
